Why Incubatio, Why Now?
A Turning in the Human–Cosmic Story
We are living through more than a difficult period. Incubatio begins from the intuition that we are in a turning point in the long story of human evolution and our relationship with the cosmos.
Many people feel that:
- The old ways no longer work
- The future is uncertain and fragile
- Something deeper is trying to come into view
This page offers a first orientation: a way of seeing where we are, why it feels as it does, and what Incubatio is here to support.
Every level of life is changing:
- Ecological systems are under extreme pressure
- Social bonds are fraying and polarising
- Geo-political shifts on a scale beyond any of our personal histories are taking place
- Technologies—from digital networks to artificial intelligence—transform how we think, work and imagine
Many experience this as fear, grief and loss. For others, it may present as an opportunity in crisis. Beneath these symptoms lies a deeper necessity for, and trajectory towards, a shift of worldview.
Over the past few centuries, modern culture has been shaped by a mechanistic model of reality—separating inner from outer, human from nature, subject from object, past from future. That framework produced great power but latterly also profound devastation at human and ecological levels.
Today, across science, philosophy and lived experience, another view is emerging: reality as interdependent and alive. Many ancient cultures knew this directly—the world as a living cosmos. That knowing was exiled; we are now learning how to recover it, in new language and practice.s.
Incubatio exists to help midwife this transition: to bring the precision of science and the depth of spiritual and moral practice into a single inquiry about what it means to be human within a living universe. At Incubatio, we call this worldview holonomic – a vital fourth axis to a time/space/matter continuum.
Purpose
Incubatio’s purpose is to:
- Help people orient in a time of systemic crisis and rapid change
- Weave insights from science, social innovation and wisdom traditions
- Support embodied, ethical transformation in individuals, communities and institutions
- Act as a living repository and mirror for an emergent, relational worldview
Incubatio is a pioneering field of practice: exploring into the depth of being human including its many difficulties, bur participating in the shaping of new realities.
Three Realms of Inquiry
- Inner & Human World
- Changing senses of meaning, identity and agency
- How trauma, grief and uncertainty manifest in body and relationship
- Contemplative, therapeutic and philosophical practices that foster presence
- How neuroscience and older understandings of soul and spirit can meet
- Exploring the nature of being human and pathways for self-realisation
- Emerging Understandings
- Complexity science, biology, neuroscience, ecology, physics and cosmology re‑examined through a living systems lens
- Technological evolution—including AI—as both mirror and maker of consciousness
- The rediscovery of ancient consciousness structures through imagination and careful integration
- How such shifts alter our sense of causality, time and relationship
- Institutions & Collective Forms
- Transformation of economics, governance, education, health and community
- Reviving reciprocity, commons and ritual as social foundations
- Field reports from experiments in regenerative practice
These realms interweave as a spiral: inner transformation shapes understanding, which shapes institutions, which in turn affect our inner life. These patterns are reflected through time and space: an evolving planet along with an evolving human consciousness. Deepening into an understanding of the connections between spirit and matter – an inquiry and commitment that the times urgently demand.
Integrating Wisdom from the Past and across Space
Incubatio honours and carefully integrates wisdom and practice from the past and across space in existing traditions.
We recognise that many contemporary insights echo what ancient, contemplative and indigenous traditions have long embodied. Much of that knowledge has become institutionally rigidified, or marginalised by colonisation and narrow rationalism. A sustainable future depends on rekindling the deeper root system while remaining ethically alert.
We welcome collaboration with tradition‑bearers, elders, practitioners and scholars who speak from within their lineages. This is not to appropriate, butcher or capitalise upon these lineages, but to treating this as delicate work that requires humility, context and genuine dialogue —one of the most promising ways to create pathways that can restore a felt belonging within a living cosmos,
Our Approach
We approach inquiry as both an intellectual and human art — a meeting of curiosity, reflection, and lived experience. Ideas are explored with both precision and openness, recognising that understanding evolves through depth and conversation
At the heart of this work is the human being — not only as observer, but as participant and field of knowing. Inquiry asks for courage, attentiveness, and a willingness to be changed by what is found. The hub offers companionship and support for this journey of discovery — between self, world, and the ever-present invisible patterns that connect them. We recognise that this requires the courage to meet patterns of shame and trauma that have been pushed out of a mechanistic worldview, and offer a crucible to acknowledge our shared suffering.
Our Approach in Practice
Human-centered and inclusive – We explore ideas and experiences with openness and curiosity, recognising that each perspective reveals part of a larger story. The human being—both instrument and field of inquiry—stands at the heart of this work.
Reflective and grounded – We stay close to lived experience while allowing space for what moves beneath the surface. Research and reflection meet here, helping deeper insight emerge.
Courageous and supported – Inquiry asks for honesty, courage, and a willingness to change. The hub offers companionship and steady support for this inner and outer journey.
Mindful use of technology – We use digital tools, including AI, to deepen awareness and connection rather than dilute them.
Rigour and humility – Ideas and lineages are treated seriously while recognising the limits of any perspective
Depth and accessibility – Writing that is thoughtful and well grounded yet readable by non‑specialists
We welcome scientists, researchers, practitioners, and scholars who are seeking a space where rigorous inquiry can coexist with the wider questions of consciousness, imagination and human meaning.
How Incubatio Will Evolve
Phase 1 – Foundations (now):
Launching the web hub, initial Living Library and small dialogues
Phase 2 – Courses and Gatherings (October launch):
Beginning with Living Through Transition: Inner Orientation for a World in Crisis—a four‑week online course supported by optional salons and practices.
Phase 3 – Extended Living Library (2026 onward):
Developing and exploring new concepts and languages for navigating and creating the times we are in.Over time, the concepts that are useful and creative will unfold through the iteration between the Chiron Academy and Living Library. This will consist structured research collections, annotated bibliographies, and audio‑visual dialogues linking science, wisdom and applied practice.
Over time, the courses and the Living Library may unfold as a network of interrelated disciplines—scientific, contemplative, artistic and practical—echoing the integrative learning of earlier ages, as far back as the old mystery schools, yet re‑imagined for our time. For now, Incubatio remains a single crucible, holding these seeds as possibilities to be discovered rather than predetermined goals.
Who We Are
Founded by Bronwen Rees, drawing on decades of work at the intersections of spirituality, organisational transformation and social research.
Incubatio is forming an editorial circle of scholars, practitioners and tradition‑bearers across cultures—people dedicated to enquiry that unites inner and outer worlds with honesty and rigour.
Origins and Lineage
The seeds of Incubatio were sown through two intertwined laboratories—one academic, one spiritual. While directing the Centre for Transformational Management at Cambridge Business School, Bronwen founded Crucible Research, bringing mindfulness teachers and scholars together to test how contemplative practice could enter complex organisations. That work included the supervision of radical doctoral projects and culminated in the collaborative paper between academics and business leaders on Crisis in Capitalism, recognised, despite much local opposition, among the top twenty of nine thousand submissions at the Academy of Management in 2013.
At the same time, the East West Sanctuary in Hungary (2004–2014) offered a physical counterpart—a meeting ground for Eastern and Western thought, economics, psychotherapy and art. Its dialogues and retreats were enriched by close friendship with the founder of the Buddhist University in Budapest and by gatherings of Buddhist sangha leaders and spiritual teachers from across Europe. From this rich lived experience grew the living principle that knowledge ripens only where inner and outer disciplines meet in honesty and compassion.
Incubatio emerges from these crossings—academia and contemplation, East and West, theory and lived practice—a distillation of many years’ work at the edges of institutions and the thresholds of spirit.
